Outside the window: highway, palm trees, stretches of desert, then the first hotels. And suddenly, on the horizon, a strip of sea. Not a postcard, just a line that seems to put everything unnecessary on pause.

Flavour without the fuss

Hurghada’s cuisine is built around spices and uncomplicated combinations. Cafés serve ful medames, falafel, kebabs, herb-roasted chicken and fish without heavy sauces.

At the markets, the air is rich with aromas: cumin, cardamom and dried limes. Stalls are piled with dates and pomegranates. Vendors offer samples of olives, halva and nuts. An ordinary lunch easily becomes a small ritual: bread, salad, tahini and iced tea.

Find your own stretch of shore

El Sakia is ideal for those seeking quiet: soft sand, a gentle entry into the water and calm waves. In the morning, it is nearly empty — just seagulls and fishing boats.

Soma Bay and Makadi have a different feel: wind, clear water and enthusiasts with kites and boards. These areas have less dense development and a greater sense of seclusion.

The swimming season lasts for almost the whole year. In January, the sea is around 22 °C, while in summer it is very warm. Follow basic precautions: swim only in designated areas, stay within the buoys and follow local safety guidance.

Everyday life made easy

Choose accommodation to suit your style: all-inclusive hotels for those who enjoy full service, and guesthouses or apartments for travellers who prefer independence.

Getting around is simple: minibuses and taxis run between districts, with taxi fares best agreed in advance. Tuk-tuks are convenient for short trips.

Staying connected and handling money is straightforward: tourist SIM cards are available from local providers, and ATMs dispense Egyptian pounds. Tips, or baksheesh, are part of the local service culture.

Safety comes down to simple rules: follow lifeguard advice where available, avoid swimming after dark and do not touch marine life.

The reef, at an easy pace

For many, Hurghada means the underwater world. Even a simple snorkelling trip feels like stepping into another reality: clear water, schools of fish and coral patterns. Visibility often reaches 15–20 metres — enough to make the experience memorable.

Dive centres offer transfers, equipment and briefings. Popular sites include El Fanadir Reef and the Giftun Islands. The key rule is simple: do not touch the corals or stir up the sand.

Two sides of the city

Dahar, the old quarter, does not try to look a certain way. Its streets are narrow, with spice shops and workshops where fishing nets are repaired. Vendors call out loudly, while the air smells of roasted nuts and coffee.

The Marina is its complete opposite: yachts, waterside restaurants and evening lights. It is a lovely place to walk once the heat eases. The contrast between Dahar and the Marina is perhaps the most honest description of Hurghada.
