To be honest, everyone imagines a romantic holiday differently. For some, it means a luxury hotel and a beautiful room overlooking the sea. For others, it is enough to buy coffee in the evening, head down to the water and simply sit together for a long time. Over time, you realise one strange thing: it does not really matter how much the trip cost. What you remember are entirely different things: how long you laughed along the way, how you stumbled upon a little café, or how you wandered until dark because you did not want to go back yet.
Everyone has probably heard of Santorini. Sometimes it even feels as though the place has been advertised so heavily that it could not possibly surprise you in real life. That would have been my expectation too. But then you arrive and understand why people keep recommending this island. You do not feel like rushing anywhere. You simply wander along the white streets, turn down whichever lane catches your eye, browse small shops and then sit somewhere with a view of the sea. In the evening, everyone starts waiting for the sunset. You know it is only a sunset, of course. But when the sun slowly slips below the horizon, everything around you somehow falls silent for a few minutes.

The Amalfi Coast will appeal to anyone who dislikes holidays planned down to the minute. It feels strange to plan too far ahead here. Sometimes the best day is the one you never planned at all. You find a little café, have lunch, spot a beautiful staircase between the houses, climb up, stop to look at the sea and carry on. No rush. That is probably the whole point.

The Azores feel completely different. There is no sense that you are surrounded by crowds of tourists or that you need to see everything in a single day. You drive along at an easy pace, notice a beautiful view, pull over and get out simply because you feel like it. You can stand at the edge of a viewpoint for a few minutes, look out over the ocean, breathe the fresh air, exchange a few words or simply admire the landscape in silence. Then you get back in the car and continue on. For some reason, it is these unplanned stops that often stay with you most vividly.
Colmar leaves a wonderfully warm impression. This town is not about grand landmarks. Its charm lies elsewhere. You walk along the streets, looking at the old houses, flowers in the windows and little bridges over the canals. Then you happen to stop for coffee, sit for forty minutes, talk about absolutely everything and continue your walk. Nothing especially remarkable seems to have happened, yet these are the days you somehow remember more often than any others.
Madeira is not a typical beach escape either. Rather than spending the whole day on a sun lounger, the real pleasure here is simply walking. Sometimes you follow a path along a cliff and want to stop every few minutes. Not because you are tired, but because the view ahead has changed again. At first, you keep taking out your phone to take photos. Then you realise you have not done that for quite a while. You are simply standing there and looking. Somehow, that feels more right.
There is also the Croatian island of Vis. It is mentioned far less often, although it is a truly wonderful place. Nothing feels as though it exists solely for tourists. You can easily find a small cove, sit right by the shore and do nothing at all. Just listen to the waves, watch the water and talk. Sometimes the best evening of a holiday looks exactly like that, without any big entertainment.

Perhaps that is why romantic trips are remembered not for beautiful rooms or expensive restaurants. A year later, it is hard to recall what you had for dinner on the first day or how much the hotel cost. But it is easy to remember an evening stroll, a chance conversation, something funny that happened along the way, or a moment when you simply sat together with nowhere to rush. It is these little things that create the feeling that a trip was truly special.
We will show you how many fascinating places there still are in this world.
