A beach holiday does not get boring for everyone. But when several days in a row feel more or less the same, at some point you may want to shake things up. You do not have to do anything completely crazy. Sometimes it is enough to stand on a surfboard for the first time, ride down rapids, or climb somewhere where just looking down makes you uneasy.
There are places where activities like these are right on your doorstep. You do not need to travel across half the country for a single adventure: the right landscapes, instructors, and everything you need are already nearby. All that remains is to decide how far you want to go.
Costa Rica is ideal for combining time by the sea with trips of a completely different kind. You can start the morning with a walk along the coast, then find yourself surrounded by lush greenery and, before long, sitting in a boat in the middle of a river.
Rafting is considered one of the main local activities. On calmer stretches, you can catch your breath, but then come the rapids, rocks, and turns where there is no time for conversation. The difficulty depends on the route you choose, so a first experience can be enjoyed without unnecessary risk.

There are also routes near volcanoes. Here there is no need to rush: the trail passes through forest, surrounded by unfamiliar vegetation, and you may even come across hot springs along the way.
Cape Town is quite unusual in this respect. The mountains begin virtually beside the city, while the ocean is within easy reach. That means you do not have to travel far for memorable experiences.
One option is paragliding. A few minutes ago, you were standing on the ground, and now houses, roads, and the coastline stretch out beneath your feet. For anyone who has never flown before, it is a powerful feeling.

You can take a different route and book a surfing lesson. Waves in some areas can be serious, so it is definitely not wise to tackle them alone on your first attempt. With an instructor, everything is much clearer: first you learn the basics, then it is time to practise.
If heights and water do not appeal to you, there are hiking trails. Some sections are very easy, while others will make you work for it, but the views of the city and coast from the top are excellent.
At first, Interlaken does not seem like a destination for extreme tourism at all. Lakes, neat houses, green valleys — it feels like a place people visit solely for beautiful photographs.
But look a little closer, and the picture changes. In the surrounding area, you can go canyoning, rafting, or take to the air.
Canyoning is especially different from an ordinary walk. You make your way through a gorge, sometimes walking directly through the water, climbing over rocks, and navigating around whatever lies in your path. In some places you need to jump; in others, carefully make your way onward.

After an activity like that, an ordinary stroll around town feels almost like a lazy day of rest.
People come to Queenstown for more than its lakes and mountains. The city has long been one of those places where you can deliberately seek out an activity that feels a little frightening before it even begins.
The most famous option is bungee jumping. At first, it all looks quite simple: safety gear, a platform, an instructor. Then you walk to the edge and realise that you really do have to take that step forward.
There is also rafting, jet boating, and skydiving. If you wish, you can plan a day with very few quiet hours in between.
But that is part of Queenstown’s appeal: no one forces you to chase adrenaline all the time. After an active adventure, you can head to the lake, enjoy dinner, and simply sit back with a view of the mountains.
In Hawaii, surfing has long been part of the local culture, and Oahu is considered one of the best-known islands for this kind of holiday.
If you have never stood on a board before, it is best to start with a surf school. The instructor explains everything on shore first, then helps you make your first attempts in the water. Falling is almost inevitable, and there is nothing wrong with that.
If surfing is not for you, there are still kayaks, snorkelling, and diving. So no one is likely to run out of things to do here.
That said, do not underestimate the ocean. Even a beautiful, calm-looking coast can become completely different when the waves or currents change. For your first sessions, choose trusted locations and follow the advice of professionals.
There is no universal level of difficulty. For one person, jumping from a platform is an ordinary pastime, while another may feel like a hero simply after climbing a high cliff.
So there is no need to choose the toughest challenge straight away. You can start with a short rafting trip, a board lesson, or a flight with an instructor. If you enjoy it, next time you can aim for something more serious.
The main thing is not to forget about safety. Reliable equipment, a qualified instructor, and suitable conditions matter more than the desire to get a great video for social media.
These are usually the moments that stay with you. A few years later, it can be hard to remember how many hours you spent by the pool. But your first successful ride on a wave, or the moment before a jump, is much harder to forget.
We will show you how many fascinating places there still are in this world.
