When people talk about expensive resorts, many immediately picture the same thing: overwater bungalows, white sand, palm trees, and price tags so high you wonder whether an extra zero was added by mistake. From the outside, it can seem as though the whole point of this kind of holiday is to signal status. But if you read accounts from people who have actually been there, it becomes clear that the price is rarely what they remember most. The conversation usually goes in a different direction. Some talk about complete silence; others say it was the first time in ages they stopped constantly checking their phone; and some remember finally being somewhere without crowds.

The Maldives has long been almost synonymous with a luxury holiday. Yet not every trip here costs a fortune. Still, there are private islands that remain out of reach for most travellers. Small villas stand right above the lagoon. Open the door, take a few steps along the wooden deck, and you can dive straight into the warm sea. Interestingly, after returning home, many people barely mention the expensive interiors. They remember something else instead: waking up in the morning, stepping onto the terrace, and finding it so quiet that all you can hear is the waves and the wind.

Saint Barthélemy has an entirely different feel. This Caribbean island has long been a favourite of famous actors, musicians, and entrepreneurs. Yet luxury here does not try to demand attention every second. Nothing feels designed purely for show. There are small restaurants, neat homes, and inviting coves. Everything feels calm and almost homely. Perhaps that is why people return here when they want to spend a few days without attracting unwanted attention.

Bora Bora evokes completely different emotions. Almost everyone has seen photographs of wooden bungalows above a turquoise lagoon at least once. To be honest, those images can look as though they have been enhanced before publication. But travellers often say the opposite: in person, it looks even more remarkable. Green peaks are reflected in the water, fish drift slowly nearby, and the water is so clear that you can see the seabed perfectly even without a mask. It is difficult to explain why this view stays with you. At some point, you simply realise that you have been sitting and looking at the same spot for half an hour because you do not want to go anywhere else.

In Europe, Costa Smeralda in Sardinia immediately comes to mind. In summer, luxury yachts arrive here, expensive cars line up outside restaurants, and finding an available table in the evening can be difficult. But that is not what impresses most. It is far more enjoyable simply to walk along the coast. Pale cliffs, small coves, crystal-clear water, and a relaxed atmosphere have their effect. After a while, you stop noticing the expensive things around you altogether.

The Seychelles has also long ranked among the world’s most prestigious destinations. Some hotels occupy almost the entire area of small islands, which means there are very few guests. At times, you can stroll along the shore for quite a while and encounter only a handful of people. Giant granite boulders, dense greenery, and ocean water so vividly coloured that it first seems artificially enhanced. But look at it without a camera, and you realise it really does look exactly like that.

Interestingly, holidays like these are rarely remembered for expensive purchases, unusual activities, or lavish restaurants. Instead, the moments that stay with you most are often the simplest ones: a leisurely breakfast on an open terrace, an evening walk without crowds, the sound of the surf that can still be heard at night. Nothing especially extraordinary, perhaps, yet these small details somehow come back to mind months later far more often than the room’s interior or the hotel’s name.

That may be why a high price is not always seen as payment for a beautiful villa alone. In many cases, people are paying for the chance to step out of their usual routine, even briefly: away from endless notifications, traffic, rushing around, and the constant feeling of being late for something. Sometimes, that opportunity turns out to be the most valuable part of the entire trip.
