The World’s Most Unusual Resorts That Almost Nobody Knows About
It may seem as though everything there is to say about holidays has already been said. Open any travel website and the familiar names appear almost immediately: Turkey, Egypt, the Maldives, Thailand. It can feel as if no other places exist. But that is far from true. There are resorts that rarely make it into travel round-ups, yet leave you with no fewer impressions after a visit. Sometimes, even more.
A great example is Socotra Island. At first glance, it looks unreal in photographs. Strange trees with broad canopies, almost empty rocky plains, and unusual plants. If you did not know such a place really existed, you could easily mistake it for a scene from a film or an artist’s creation. But it is all real.
Socotra is not about expensive hotels or lively parties. People come here for something entirely different. It is simply a chance to see a place unlike any other. Even a walk along the shore feels different, with none of the usual bustle around you. All you hear is the wind and the sea. That is probably what makes the island so captivating.
Lord Howe Island is a completely different story. It lies between Australia and New Zealand. It is not discussed nearly as often as the region’s better-known resorts. Perhaps that is why it has retained such a peaceful atmosphere. Visitor numbers are deliberately limited here. At first, that may seem unusual, but it helps keep the natural environment almost untouched.
There is no sense that every available metre has already been filled with sun loungers or cafés. Sometimes all you need is a walk along the shore, a little time by the water, or a climb to a higher point to look out over the ocean. And suddenly, you realise that you need nothing more for a good holiday.
Palawan in the Philippines is completely different again. Looking at photos, the first thing that catches your eye is the colour of the water. Then you notice the cliffs. They seem to rise straight out of the sea, and it feels as though you could spend hours exploring between them by boat, turning into one small cove after another. Interestingly, that is exactly what many people do. Some come for a day and end up staying longer because there is simply no desire to rush.
Vis Island has a similar feel. Many travellers choose Dubrovnik or Split and do not even think of it. Yet the atmosphere here is entirely different. In the evenings, locals sit along the waterfront, fishermen return to the harbour, and small family-run cafés are open. Everything feels wonderfully calm, without the sense that the town exists solely for tourists. Perhaps it is these small details that stay in the memory more vividly than another beautiful hotel.
There is also Isla Mujeres, near Cancún. It is very close by, yet the difference is noticeable almost immediately. Something is always happening in Cancún, and there are crowds at nearly any time of day. The island is calmer. You can simply walk along the shore, stop for a coffee, and watch the boats at the pier. The day passes without haste, and at some point you find yourself thinking that this is exactly the kind of holiday you sometimes need.
All these places share one thing in common. They do not try to impress at any cost. There is no feeling that every metre of coastline has been turned into an attraction. Everything feels natural. Perhaps that is why, after trips like these, it is not individual landmarks that people remember most, but ordinary moments.
The sound of waves in the morning, an empty path by the sea, a sunset with no crowds around. Nothing particularly extraordinary, perhaps, yet these are somehow the details that come back to mind first.
