What to Do at a Resort When You’re Tired of Lying on the Beach

The first few days by the sea usually fly by. In the morning, there’s no need to rush anywhere: go for a swim, soak up the sun, head out for lunch, then return to the water. Bliss. But after a few days, you start to feel like spending the next one a little differently.

What to Do at a Resort When You’re Tired of Lying on the Beach

The first few days by the sea usually fly by. There is nowhere to rush in the morning, then you can swim, sunbathe, go for lunch and head back to the water. Bliss. But after a few days, you may realise you would like to spend the next one a little differently.

That does not mean you are tired of your holiday. Sometimes you simply want to see something other than the sea — and you do not have to spend half your holiday budget to do it.

Explore the Town

Leave your hotel and wander without much of a plan. Turn off the main street, see what ordinary homes look like, stop by a bakery or pick up a coffee.

Tourist centres can feel a little artificial: signs, souvenirs, restaurants with menus in five languages. But walk a little farther and the town immediately feels different. Someone is hanging out laundry, neighbours are chatting outside a shop, music plays from an open window.

Nothing remarkable may seem to be happening, but these are often the walks you remember better than yet another landmark.

Take a Day Trip

If everything nearby already feels familiar, head somewhere else for a few hours. Visit a neighbouring town or a small village, for example.

It is especially nice if you have a car. Do not like the first place? Keep driving. Spot a beautiful turnoff? Stop. Feel hungry? Pull into a roadside café.

These trips often turn out to be completely spontaneous. You may set off in the morning just to drive around, then spend the evening talking about a random viewpoint or a little town you had never even heard of.

Try Something on the Water

If you no longer feel like lying on the shore, that is no reason to forget about the sea altogether. Rent a paddleboard, kayak or small boat.

Everything looks different from the water. Hotels seem smaller, the next bay no longer feels so far away, and familiar cliffs take on a completely new look.

You can also take a mask and snorkel. Sometimes just a few metres from shore are enough to spot fish and other marine life. And if you are looking for a bigger adventure, there is always diving.

Find a Great Place to Eat

Sometimes the easiest way to add variety to a holiday is through food. Instead of your usual restaurant near the hotel, find somewhere the locals actually go.

Ask a shopkeeper, taxi driver or your accommodation host for a recommendation. Their suggestions are often far more useful than the first results in a travel app.

And order something unfamiliar. The name may mean nothing to you, and the appearance may not make things any clearer — so all that remains is to try it. Sometimes you discover something truly delicious. Other times, you understand why you had not wanted to order that dish before.

Visit the Market

A market is a great place to take a break from the resort’s tourist side.

You will find fruit, fish, spices, sweets and everything else people buy for everyday life. Some people bargain, others choose ingredients for dinner, and vendors chat among themselves.

Simply wander between the stalls. Even without buying anything, it is a good way to understand what life in the town is like when there are no tour groups around.

Get Moving

After several days on a sun lounger, you may well feel like being active. Cycling, tennis or a walk are all great options.

If there are mountains nearby, try an easy hike to a viewpoint. From above, the familiar resort looks completely different, especially in the evening.

Just avoid tackling a long route in the heat. Early morning is much more pleasant, and you might catch the sunrise and get back before the day becomes too hot.

See the Resort in the Evening

Everything changes after sunset. During the day, many streets seem sleepy, but in the evening there is music, glowing signs and people everywhere.

Find a small concert or market, or simply choose a restaurant with an outdoor terrace. Sometimes you may not want to look for anything at all — a slow stroll through the centre followed by a drink somewhere is enough.

These evenings are especially enjoyable after an active day. There is no need to rush anywhere; you can simply sit and watch life unfold around you.

And Sometimes It Is Best to Do Nothing at All

There is one thing that is easy to forget on holiday: you can rest without having a plan.

If a few days of trips, conversations and constantly going somewhere have left you tired, it is perfectly fine to stay in your room. Sleep, read, order food or simply lie down and scroll on your phone.

Then, most likely, the next day you will feel like heading back to the sea.

After all, the point of a holiday is not to make sure every day brings ten new experiences. Sometimes you want an adventure, sometimes a long drive, and sometimes all you need is quiet and a cold drink in the shade. All three can make for a wonderful break.
