What to See on Your Trip: Beyond the “Must-See” Attractions

It sounds incredible when a traveller says: “I’ve been to the highest peak, the tallest waterfall, photographed the world’s largest pyramid, and seen the deepest lake and the longest wall.” There is no denying that these places are unique and on many people’s wish lists. But in the pursuit of the “biggest” and “highest,” travellers sometimes overlook places that are no less remarkable. They may rank second in size, but they are still well worth your attention.

The Great Wall of China is the world’s longest defensive structure, while Ranikot Fort is often described as the world’s largest fort. Also known as the Great Wall of Sindh, it stretches for around 32 kilometres. Unlike at China’s most famous landmark, you can take photos here without huge crowds. The fort lies 90 kilometres north of Hyderabad, along the Indus Highway. And if you absolutely need a “largest” label, this fort certainly has one. Its original purpose remains unclear, while major rebuilding work is generally associated with the Talpur period in the early 19th century.

Many travellers dream of conquering one of the world’s highest peaks. Everest is the obvious choice, but only a few take the more demanding route and attempt K2. Also known as Chogori, it is the world’s second-highest mountain, just 237 metres lower than Everest. With its almost perfectly pyramidal shape, it has been climbed by only a little over 300 people. It is also one of the most technically challenging mountains in the world, which explains why so few have reached its summit. The journey to K2 begins in Skardu, Pakistan. What better reason to plan a trip to this remarkable country?

When it comes to lakes, Lake Baikal is often the first that comes to mind. The second-deepest lake in the world is Lake Tanganyika in Central Africa. Its waters are exceptionally clear, with visibility reaching up to 30 metres. And it has its own “most” distinction too: an extraordinary variety of underwater life. Remarkably, the lake borders four countries: Tanzania, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Zambia. Tanzania is generally the most convenient starting point. Along the shore, you will find equipped beaches and a national park, while fishing is a popular activity. Most importantly, do not ignore warning signs: crocodiles live here.

Visiting the Grand Canyon in the United States is a dream for many travellers. However, it is far away for many visitors, and the trip can be expensive. A spectacular alternative is the Tara Canyon in Montenegro, the deepest canyon in Europe. It is located around 200 kilometres from the popular resort town of Budva. Guided excursions are available, or you can rent a car and drive to the national park independently. The breathtaking views will leave no traveller unmoved!

For fans of antiquity, consider Tunisia rather than Rome. This is where the famous film “Gladiator” is often said to have been filmed, although the movie was actually shot mainly in Malta, Morocco and the United Kingdom. You may still hear the claim on local tours. The Amphitheatre of El Jem, commissioned during the reign of Gordian I, is better preserved than the Colosseum and is one of the largest surviving Roman amphitheatres.

The Egyptian pyramids are easier to compare. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, while the second-largest belongs to his son, Khafre. It is only a few metres lower, and the distance between them is less than a kilometre—an 8–10-minute walk. During one visit, you can see two of the tallest Egyptian pyramids if you look a little more closely. For some reason, the Pyramid of Khafre is often overlooked as visitors take photos in front of Khufu’s tomb and the Great Sphinx.

If you enjoy the beauty of the sea and exploring its depths, the Belize Barrier Reef is for you. It is the second-largest coral reef system in the world after Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. Angel Falls in Venezuela is traditionally considered the world’s tallest waterfall, with a height of 979 metres. Tugela Falls in South Africa is also among the world’s tallest, measuring about 948 metres. It is located in Royal Natal National Park. From top to bottom, it is an unforgettable sight.

Of course, none of these places is exactly a secret, but it is fascinating to visit both the record holders and the places that come close behind them. So do not overlook destinations that rank second in size. They may not always appear on a standard travel itinerary, but perhaps one of these extraordinary places will inspire your next journey.
