Gagra is a resort town that has been famous since Soviet times and remains a popular destination today. You may have heard that it is Abkhazia’s most expensive resort, with many abandoned buildings and little to do. But is that really the case? Let’s look at this place from a different perspective.
One advantage of this Abkhazian town is that the local currency is the Russian ruble. Entry requirements depend on your nationality, so check the rules for your passport before you travel. If you plan to visit Georgia at a later date, travelling to Abkhazia may cause complications, so be sure to check the current entry regulations in advance.
There are several ways to reach the resort. The nearest airport is in Sochi. From there, you can take a taxi or public transport to the border crossing, then continue to the resort by bus. Alternatively, take the Aeroexpress to Adler and travel onwards by rail or bus. Trains also run to Adler and Sukhumi, where you can change to a local train. During the summer season, buses operate from various cities, and boats depart from Sochi. Travelling by your own or rented car is another option. As you can see, there are plenty of ways to get to Gagra, and you will certainly be able to plan the journey independently. If you would rather not worry about the logistics, consider booking a package tour, which is usually reasonably priced for this destination.
There are no major shopping centres here, so this is not the place for large shopping trips. You will find a market, small shops including souvenir stores, and plenty of cafés serving a variety of local dishes. To save money, consider choosing accommodation with meals included.
Speaking of accommodation, many visitors rush to book a place right by the seafront, where the beach is only steps away. Of course, the sound of the sea—and sometimes late-night parties—may reach your windows, but you can be in the water within minutes. Visitors who know the town well often recommend staying closer to the mountains. The walk to the beach then takes around 15 to 25 minutes, but accommodation is generally cheaper farther from the shore, while higher locations offer fresher air and better views.
The beaches are pebbly, with some areas where pebbles mix with sand. The entry into the water is gentle, so the resort is popular with families travelling with children. Wherever you stay, you are likely to find small cafés along the beach, while vendors offer cold drinks and snacks.
There is more to do in town than might seem at first glance. The resort is surrounded by greenery, making it a pleasant place for walks. There are indeed many abandoned buildings. On the one hand, this can feel sad; on the other, fans of unusual and forgotten places may enjoy exploring them. Access is not prohibited at many sites, so they attract plenty of visitors. Keep an eye on children, as there may be broken glass. Tours of such places are not usually offered. Excursions, however, can be booked anywhere souvenirs are sold, with options to suit every taste—from sightseeing trips to Sochi and the mountains to visits to other resorts in the region.
Many local drivers offer transfer services, so you can gather a group and head out to enjoy the mountain scenery. If you are unsure about this option, it may be better to rent a car. Still, the experience is worth it: you can see the area’s main natural landmarks and admire the views. A road trip can be even more memorable than travelling by a standard tourist bus.
If water is your element, there are activities for every taste and budget. You can simply relax on the beach or go underwater: as at many Black Sea resorts, diving is popular here. You can also ride boats, catamarans and banana boats, or try paragliding. Another option is a sightseeing cruise along the coast, often including a swim in the open sea. Dolphins can sometimes be spotted from these boats.
Although the resort’s beaches offer a range of activities and services, the infrastructure is not especially developed compared with other popular Black Sea destinations. However, this has its advantages: Gagra’s beaches do not usually become overwhelmingly crowded. Even in high season, you can easily find a quiet spot to relax in the sun. Be careful when visiting with small children, as some beaches have large concrete structures, apparently once intended for mooring small boats but heavily worn by the sea. They are not everywhere, and a short walk farther along the coast will often take you beyond them.
Is Gagra a good choice for a summer holiday? Absolutely. Compared with many European resorts, package holidays here can be affordable. The season does not end with summer: autumn brings the pleasant “velvet season” as well. Scenic nature, mountains and the sea are the main reasons to come here. Excursions, local dishes and walks along the coast will make your trip even more memorable. There are few luxury hotels and high-end suites, and many buildings still reflect the Soviet era. But that does not prevent you from enjoying a simple, peaceful holiday.
