Resorts built almost from scratch for tourists

Some places become popular naturally. Ordinary people live there at first, then someone notices the beautiful coastline, great weather or convenient location. Gradually, more and more visitors arrive. But sometimes it happens the other way around: a suitable piece of land is found, and it is immediately decided that it will become a place where people come to relax.

The most interesting part is that some of these destinations began as completely empty stretches of coastline.

Cancún

Today, Cancún looks as though it were designed especially for holiday advertisements: white sand, vivid blue water and hotels lining the sea. But as late as the 1960s, it was a very quiet place.

A small fishing community lived in the area that would become the city. There were hardly any roads, and the land remained largely undeveloped. In the 1970s, the Mexican authorities decided to invest in the coast.

First came the airport, followed by roads and the first hotels. Restaurants, shops and entertainment venues soon followed. All of this transformed the area beyond recognition in a remarkably short time.

Today, Cancún is known far beyond Mexico. There is one fascinating detail, though: ancient Maya sites lie nearby. So after a few days on the beach, you can set off to discover a very different side of the region.

Sharm El Sheikh

The contrast is even sharper in Sharm El Sheikh. It is surrounded by desert and mountains, with clear waters and coral reefs close by.

The underwater world became the main attraction of this part of the Sinai Peninsula. At first, visitors came mainly for the sea, and then everything needed for a complete holiday began to be built around it.

Hotels, restaurants, shops and promenades appeared. Today, the tourist part of the city feels quite lively, yet drive a little farther out and the desert landscape returns.

It creates an unusual scene: pools, palm trees and manicured grounds come to an end, and just beyond them lie rocks and mountains.

Punta Cana

Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic was once much quieter too. Long beaches, palm trees and hardly any large buildings in sight.

Then the coast began to be developed rapidly. Hotel complexes, restaurants, roads and golf courses were built here. Over time, a vast holiday zone took shape.

Some hotel grounds are so large that there is hardly any reason to leave them. Breakfast is nearby, so is the pool, and the sea is only minutes away. For a slow, carefree holiday, it is close to ideal.

But travel a little farther afield and the impression changes. You can find caves, mangrove forests and small settlements where life follows a very different rhythm.

Dubai

Dubai does not quite fit the definition of a city created from scratch. A settlement had existed here for a long time. But its modern appearance emerged so quickly that the comparison still feels natural.

Desert areas were developed intensively. New districts, roads, an airport, shopping centres and hotels were built. Later came artificial islands and skyscrapers that became reasons to visit in their own right.

Dubai has not focused on beaches alone. People come here for shopping, restaurants, architecture and simple curiosity. Sometimes you just want to see for yourself a city that managed to rise in the middle of the desert.

How is this even possible?

A beautiful coastline is not enough to create a new tourist hub. You need roads, water, electricity, communications, an airport and a huge number of people to keep it all running every day.

On the other hand, there is no need to work around old urban development. It is possible to decide in advance where the hotels will be, where the roads will run and where open space will remain.

That is why some modern destinations look a little unusual. They did not grow over centuries. They were effectively assembled piece by piece, with a clear understanding from the start of why everything was being built.

And the most striking thing is not even the number of hotels. It is the thought that only a few decades ago, the places seen in familiar photographs may have been empty coastlines. Now planes arrive, beaches are full of people, and lights come on in the evening. Out of almost nothing came a city sustained by one simple idea — giving people a great place for a holiday.
