The Republic of Malta is an island nation in the Mediterranean Sea. For the best beaches, head to Mellieħa or St. Julian's. Crystal-clear water and powdery white sand await on Comino — be sure to visit the famous Blue Lagoon there. Malta is also considered Europe's diving capital, while the town of Paceville is a favorite with younger travelers, offering everything you need for a lively club scene and buzzing nightlife. In truth, it's hard to talk about separate towns in Malta at all, since one settlement blends seamlessly into the next, with only loose, informal borders between them.
The islands have a well-developed bus network — a ticket costs €1.50 and is valid all day. That said, distances are so short that you can reach most towns on foot in about half an hour. Renting a car is also an option, though keep in mind traffic drives on the left. Ferries run between Malta, Gozo, and Comino.
Malta is also known for its refined Mediterranean cuisine. You'll get first-class service whether you dine at a large restaurant or a tiny corner eatery. Compared to prices elsewhere in the EU, restaurant prices in Malta are almost laughably low, and portions are generous.

Malta has the lowest crime rate in the European Union. The Maltese are a well-mannered people and expect the same courtesy from their guests. They can be quite expressive and loud at times — don't worry, that's just the local temperament. Nearly all Maltese speak excellent English. In hotels, it's customary to tip porters around €1-2, and to leave €2-3 for housekeeping. Restaurant tips typically run 5-10% of the bill, and if you take a taxi, add around 10%.
Malta operates a Tax Free shopping scheme, letting visitors reclaim 15% of the value of goods purchased on the island. Just be sure to keep your receipts: each one must be for at least €55, and the total must come to more than €315. The refund is paid to your specified account within three months. Travel medical insurance is a mandatory requirement for visiting the island.
